Report:
May 23, 2006 The Conejos River has been up all week with extremely mild nights and hot days. Water levels out of the dam have been cut in the last 2 days from 600 cfs to 42.6 which has dropped the lower river around 500 cfs (to 1000 cfs) and will also make the water clarity impove. Fish are gorging themselves on Stonefly nymphs and are already big and fat. Mild weather and water temps to 52 degrees in the afternoon are going to have the Stoneflies active early and as soon the water levels drop and clear expect some incredible fishing. In the last 5 days we have seen some bigger fish including a 24" Brown caught on a #8 Gorge Stone (Dry) and rumors of a 29" Brown in the upper river taken on a #10 stonefly nymph! The edges are clear enough to fish and the fish are being pushed to the edges with the bigger water. This is not primetime but if the flows from the reservoir are kept low the river will fish. I fished the meadow below Platoro this evening for a little while and landed fish from 14" to 17" on SJW's and a #12 brown biot stonefly nymph.
