When we got to the river this morning we were all excited because we could see the bottom and the flows were down (1250cfs at Mogote) Fishing was good when we nymphed with large weighted stoneflies. Caught fish for 5 hours and fishing was pretty consistent the whole time from 10:00 to 3:00. Water temps started at 43 and rose to 50 by 3:00. #8 20 incher with a tungsten bead outfished everything. The #8 Peacock Biot Stone did well in the shallower water but not in the deeper water. I also did not do very well when I had 2 nymphs on toghether!??? The single 4' below an indicator was the ticket for all of us. Smallest fish was around 14" and the largest were 20". They were fat, Browns, healthy and gave us all a great time.
Fished the La Jara on saturday and fishing was slow in the morning, a nice caddis hatch came off in the early afternoon (light tan #14) and the fishing was pretty fantastic until the Dutch Mill Fajitas started to call about 6:00. Fish were in the foam lines and tailouts during the hatch. Saw some really large fish in the foam beds.
Everyone is asking about the Stonefly hatch. Well last year it was June 13, most years the first 2 weeks of June is a good bet but it is all a guess. Feel free to call for the latest buzz. Hope this helps, Jon Harp
