Weather:Partly Cloudy
Report:
Fall is settling in on the Conejos River and the trout have become extremely sensitive and require stealth. If your patient and watch the pocket waters carefully you can still get some dry fly action on Adams and Duns. Hatches have been in mid morning and late evening. Consistent action off of 14 and 16 Prince Bead head nymphs. I caught several fat browns measuring 17 and 18 inches with the odd 12 to 14 from time to time. A dozen good fish caught in one day, by 1pm most of the fish caught did not fight too hard. By the evening the few fish caught had a better fight all were browns. I did not see a single person on the water, but did see a few at the fly shop. All reported some action.
If you want some really great fall views and some private fishing you should make at least one more trip here before winter kicks in. The river should start to clear from the rains by the weekend, check the local forecast just incase.
I have been out exploring several High Mountain lakes and ponds since my last report and discovered some great spots with a range of species. A few places with small golden trout and variations of Brookies. In all a very productive experience and a lot of work to get to some of the lakes. One trip found a lake with average trout 14 inches and put up great fights lasting 10 minutes or more. I eventually switched from a 3 wt to a 5 wt. because of the great size. I think the fish in there must not see much action from fishermen.
